They say 鈥測ou are what you eat鈥 and I believe this. I believe that I consist of much of what I consume. I consume veggies鈥ratitude鈥.beans鈥.prayer鈥read鈥elf acceptance鈥hocolate鈥.silence鈥.tofu鈥.turmoil鈥hips鈥.friendships鈥.rice鈥nd more. I consume what is said on the TV news at night鈥hat I read in books before I sleep鈥hat is said in my office and in business meetings鈥hat I learn in the classroom鈥 consume my dogs Kioko and Suki鈥檚 love and attention.听 I consume apples, oranges, and pears.听 I consume and recycle what has been said to me by family members in the past and in the present. I consume tamales, pizza, and curry dishes.听
I consume self judgment, and criticism and judgment from others. I consume respect, trust and love from others.
Much of what I consume can nourish and sustain me. Some of what I take in is just not the best thing for me emotionally or physically. Knowing what I consume brings me to further understanding on the importance of holding it gently and not grasping on to anything with too tight a grip. Mindfulness practice allows me to recognize this with less judgment.听 My own judgment and self-criticism has crippled me in so many ways in my life and really can interfere with my ability to fully digest the good that I consume.听 It can prevent me from receiving and giving on deeper levels. Mindfulness gives me a tool for balance and awareness about 鈥渨hat I eat鈥 and supports me on a path for further awareness on sustainability鈥elf care鈥ervice to others鈥iving my life as prayer.
