I am blessed to have amazing teachers in this lifetime 鈥 from India, from South America, from the reservations of our own Turtle Island.
My favorite teachers are the everyday people who teach just by being who they are.
I think of Ronnie, our Navaho guide for our Wilderness Fasts in Canyon de Chelly.听 Ronnie died last year.听 But I cherish the memory of finding her and her partner Eleanor in my driveway one night after work.听 I live three miles up a dirt road about 25 miles from Santa Fe.听 They did not have my address.听 They had driven five hours from their home in Chinle, Arizona.
I asked how on earth they had found me.听 鈥淭he Indian way,鈥 Ronnie said. 鈥淐an we have some lemonade?鈥澨 Over lemonade I learned about 鈥渢he Indian way鈥.听 鈥淔irst, we went to the gas station down by Pecos.鈥澨 I replied that I didn鈥檛 do business there.听 鈥淵eah, they told me,鈥 said Ronnie.听 鈥淪o then I went to the post office, but it was closed.鈥澨 鈥淭hen what?鈥 I asked. 鈥淲ell, we looked at a phone book at the store and found out you lived on La Cueva Road.鈥澨 I answered, 鈥淭hat鈥檚 about three miles of dirt road with twenty houses on it.鈥
鈥淵up.听 We remembered you had a green Isuzu,鈥 she said.听 I responded sarcastically, 鈥淥h, sure, you drove into every driveway till you found a green Isuzu.鈥澨 鈥淵up, that鈥檚 how we found you.鈥澨 Ronnie and Eleanor both found this story, and my disbelieving response, hilarious.
As they drive away to a family reunion in Oklahoma, I stood there, stunned and grateful 鈥 that they had bothered to visit me, that they had taken the time to find me 鈥渢he Indian way鈥.听 That night, I dreamed for hours of beautiful multicolored Navaho sand paintings鈥..
